Excitement Over ChatGPT and AI Creates Online Risk

With the recent amount, and a good amount, of news regarding the next generation of artificial intelligence (“AI”), it seems everyone is jumping on the AI bandwagon. Look nowhere than in 2022 when ChatGPT achieved one million users worldwide in the span of five days. To compare, it took Facebook ten months and Netflix over three years to achieve this milestone. Talk by experts point to a time in the near future where the workforce in many professional service jobs feel the impact of AI, whether embracing and working with the technology, or even being replaced by it.
With this constant hype comes new risks, not only from the technology itself but also in the form of scam artists exploiting this excitement. A new statement issued today by the FTC highlights this threat in the form of online ads that, when clicked, install malware or other malicious software on a user’s device and potentially obtaining sensitive personal information.
As always with By Design Law, we want our clients to use safe practices when online. Avoid clicking on links (visit the website instead via entering its URL), don’t accept search results as safe, and keep your device’s security software, operating system, and browsers up-to-date. This is for desktops, tablets, and phones. More information can be found here: https://consumer.ftc.gov/consumer-alerts/2023/04/ads-fake-ai-and-other-software-spread-malicious-software
